Quail Sizes: Jumbo vs Standard

Quail Sizes: Jumbo vs Standard

Quail come in two basic sizes. Here are the major differences:

Standard Coturnix:

  • weigh less than jumbos
  • lay more eggs (300+/yr)
  • come in a wider variety of feather patterns/colors

Jumbo Coturnix:

  • weigh 3+ oz. more vs standards
  • are bred primarily for meat
  • lay fewer eggs than standards (280-300/yr)
  • generally lay larger eggs*

*The term jumbo refers to the weight of the adult bird, not to the size of the eggs!

With both sizes, hens are usually bigger than roosters.
